Remarkable custom 1980 midcentury-modern Deck House, set back down a long private driveway on 4.6 level wooded acres of erstwhile farmland. A marvelous, recently updated modern kitchen with enough space for the most ambitious chefs and hosts, has stainless steel appliances and a Sub Zero refrigerator. The kitchen was recently opened to the main living area, with walls of glass, and a fireplace. There’s a formal dining area and a second living space with another fireplace, elevated and open to the main floor. The spacious private primary suite includes an en-suite bath and generous walk-in closets. Three additional large and airy bedrooms share a full bath. A third full bath is located off the mudroom, as is a laundry. The mudroom leads to the main attached two-car garage. Additional lower-level finished recreation space, and an unfinished basement. Other recent updates include mini-split ductless AC; new flooring throughout; and 200-amp circuit boards. A singular outbuilding — a deep five-bay climate-controlled garage-barn — offers a rare opportunity for car collectors, artists, mechanics, contractors, or myriad other work-from-home or recreation opportunities. The park-like grounds provide lots of fun entertaining and play spaces.

Meanwhile, Deck was founded in the 1950s by William Berkes, a Gropius disciple out of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Those new to this site can click many of the links to the right to read about Gropius, TAC, his firm, and the various residential projects in Boston’s western suburbs. Deck House remained more mid-century modernist in look and principle than Acorn.
After a change in ownership, the company has been back in local hands for years.
